Who has the patent on certainty?
Not those flightless birds
we call dinosaurs
or Cambrian arthropods
all extinct and fossilized.
Along comes a meteorite,
a volcanic eruption,
an ice age with some indeterminate winter,
or another invasion,
like locusts or body snatchers,
and your whole species
is up for grabs.
Then even wholesale is questionable.
Like conducting an auction of outdoor furniture
in bad weather.
So don’t be too confident
if the pickin’s now are easy.
Up there’s a hand, that unknown quality,
that is sure to scare you like the dickens.
Just watch as it manifests itself to your awareness,
ready to reach on down
and grab you by the testicles.
