…The idea of an avant garde proposes that a

poet can clear a place at the literary fromtier

for his or her own–or change what a poem is,

and thereby change Culture, creating a new kind

of line, new syntax, new orchestrations of sound,

 

image and sense.

It makes the audience a collaborator, redefining what

a poem is, and can be.

…All movements in Art ultimately restrict themselves

to those rituals they have devised, and what

they have accustomed their audience to recognize.

 

The purpose of the avant garde is the Discomfiture

of those rituals.
