For the Perfect Time-Keeper

For years

I watched the clock

But have always been late.

Black-eyed Susans

Grow wild.

They are taking over the world.

Should it be my concern?

Things are changing.

Increased population means

A greater frequency of mutation.

The myths we celebrate have a modern touch:

Einstein tattoos,

Superman tee-shirts

What I do now is set

Them all fifteen minutes fast.

It’s no damned good though,

Another failure .

I always cheat.

Up in the hills, in someone’s garage,

Some young geniuses are building a chip

That internalized, will start an un-ignorable alarm.

One problem will be solved.

Black-eyed Susans, though, have built in timers.
