The Happy Kingdom

                The Happy Kingdom

  • Why stop?
  • One had to stop.
  • Why perform?
  • One had to perform.
  • Aghast, the animals realized
  • their perverse position:
  • restless paw upon a restless paw,
  • a rustle unwillingly heard, and not responding,
  • a circle of stomachs’ unresolved growling.
  • Life has its limits.
  • How could he know
  • that to stop like this was to negate a principle?
  • He had burned his feeling.
  • He plucked and he plucked,
  • but what came out
  • was a scream.
