Absolute Love

Absolute Love

That only a mother,
her children grown, gone, scattered,
now thoroughly immersed
in their own complexity,

could so smother in love
this creature,
could envelop him in her arms
as though nothing else could be more meaningful;

And he, his eyes, his adoring eyes,
look up, and are super-nova knowing
that what feeling she feels, he feels,
is true for all eternity.

And so, instead of whining, whimpering, snarling,
or snapping at her wandering hands,
he cuddles up, inside a smile,
and wags his tail.
