Laws of the Universe
These are the qualities which bind, which pulled us closer,
eyes for art, hearts for subtle classics,
taste and sound, unbounded joy in a foreign city’s clatter,
a whirling-dervish world wherein to experience and to learn,
a seriously conscientious accumulation of data,
a very surfeit of wondrous things to gather.
How like the laws by which the universe is guided,
the consistency, for example, of a gravitational force,
that most elegant exhibition
of mass relationship, the where-with-all
without which stars will not form, nor even feathers fall.
Who are we, then, to reject this feeling,
that what we love is what we have in common,
and that, by self-same laws, we shall continue needing?
