A Progress

They stagger
from one daily event
to another,
cell phones in hand
or stuck in their ears.
For the kids in school
it’s the first thing they learn.
Perhaps, though,
that is as transitory
as sun showers, or falling leaves,
all too soon to be replaced
by some other technological advance,
internalized chips, for example, that permit
the passage of thought
from one to another
with simple cyborgian grace.
