i start to remember;
if i go back
for that thought
i may lose my way,
never get back again; be stuck
with that gloamin’ prescience
of the present,
‘till it’s something
altogether different
but, i say to myself,
that straight and narrow path
is so damn dimwitedly dull
it bores me ‘till my ears stand straight out from my head,
and that’s what’s making me tired;
i’d better stop, turn these screwed-up thoughts
to something else, maybe even
get a compensatory order from the boss:
like music,
just play it by ear,
like jazz,
a spontaneity of ideas,
fresh variations on a theme.
